In November,1998, I joined a team of Boulder city residents who traveled to Yamagata, Japan, to participate in a trade fair between the Sister-Cities of Yamagata and Boulder.  I was part of the team that represented Boulder’s art, culture and food. At the festival, I sold landscape t-shirts and pen-and-ink greeting cards and played my banjo (which I brought with me from Colorado). I was hosted by two different families while in Yamagata, and then traveled south for another week by myself, reaching Miyajima Island, Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Kamakura, drawing the entire way. This whirlwind two-week tour was an inspiring journey and a fantastic introduction to Japan’s people and cultural heritage.
